Seattle Times Mobile App Reviews

Improvements, but a way to go

I am a digital subscriber to the Seattle Times, but I can’t seem to log into this app (which I would expect to do; I do with my NY Times app). I can’t turn my iPhone horizontally to read in larger type (which I often do with other apps). I have a tablet too, and it drives me crazy when news/magazine apps do vertical only. Why would they do this annoying thing. I have an ad planted, apparently permanently, on the bottom of my screen. I now have to worry about accidentally clicking on it when I want to scroll. I understand ads. I subscribe to the paper, Get that screen hogging c*#p off my display. Why is the menu of sections available only on the home screen? I don’t want to have to go back multiple times just to pick somewhere else to read a story? Take a look at the NY Times app. It really works well. I’d like your content with their app :)

Still needs work

If they took the feature that when you "touch" an article, the whole article opens in a new window ( ala SF Chronicle), rather than having to go to another page to finish the article, this would be a 5* app for me.

New Version: No landscape mode! Ugh!

I would have given it a 5 but for this. It loads VERY fast, and accurately (iPhone SE, 5 and iPad) and that’s the most important thing. Text is easily readable. It’s only for today’s news, as there is no Search function. You’ll have to logon to their website for that, but that’s a minor thing. This is for fast, easy reading of todays news and they’ve done a good job. (Just fix for landscape view and then you have a 5 star winner…)

Reader

Fast! Lets me read many stories, quick, quick, quick.

Seriously?

Have a peek at the Vancouver Suns new layout. A great example of a news source that wants to be read.

Great app and THE SPEED

Fantastic site. So much less cumbersome than the previous version. The start-up speed is incredible as is the user-friendly swiping to jump from story to story. I also love the notification I get every morning, so all I have to do is swipe, drink my coffee, and enjoy!

Fast and improved

The improvements to this app are great. Its much faster and I love seeing the great photojournalism from the area. I wish the videos were more accessible.

Worst app ever

All of a sudden you cant find anything. Such as go to sports. Try to find topics like Huskies or Seahawks. You cant. You are forced to scroll through everything. Absolute idiots at Seattle Times.

New Design is a Vast Improvement

Easy to use and a great source for local news.

Daniel

Thank you for fixing the app and letting me actually read the news! It works great on my phone, but I cannot read it on my iPad when I rotate it. Four stars for now until you fix that.

No Bueno

No filter function for local news? Especially within sports. I only read the times to get the local coverage. Now I have to sift thru the national AP news feed to find Divish, Condotta, Stone, etc...annoying.

Big improvement

This app was dreadful for way too long. Now it is quick and responsive. Would be better if you didnt have to click out to a menu to get to other sections, i.e, Sports.

Better

Faster and looking forward to the next upgrade

From my worst app to my favorite

Much improved, very smooth and reliable. Fast. Best news app I have

Major Improvement but needs to support Landscape Mode

I find the new version speedier and better organized than the older app but please add support for landscape mode in a future update.

Usable

The latest version is a fantastic improvement over the previous one. It is not up to the level of the New York Times or the BBC but it is very good. Way better than the local TV stations. They have brought back the "latest news" category which I much appreciate. It is now necessary to browse the various sections to see all the news but that is not a serious problem. They occasionally mis file articles such as putting one about 150 people dying from the heat in India in the local news section. Perhaps they thought it related to our hot spell.

Its Okay

Its fine.

Search feature missing

Reiterating what has been said, I am annoyed with the banner ad at the screens bottom. Print subscribers should not be subjected to more ads. I find the lack of a search feature to be the most glaring flaw with the app. This is especially evident when a reference to an article in the print edition was not present in the apps business section.

Great content, app stability holds it back

The content and free format is excellent and worthy of 4-5 stars. However the stability of the app is lacking and often hangs or fails to load completely. (And this is with latest iOS, and app version.) And hence nocking it back a couple stars.

Great

They fixed the slow loading problem and made it much easier to navigate. Thank you!!
